REI Store Description
Denverites love the outdoors, and the flagship REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) store is stocked with all the gear they need to experience the abundant natural wonders of Colorado. Operated as a co-op, customers can sign up as members for a one-time $15 fee and receive an annual dividend based on purchases, along with special member discounts. REI specializes in outdoor sports such as snowboarding, skiing, bicycling, and backpacking, and they take gear-testing seriously, with outdoor mountain bike trails, a cold room for testing sleeping bags (kids will get a kick out of testing them), and an indoor climbing wall. The kicker? The store is housed in the 1901 Denver Tramway building, a former depot.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: REI is a hands-on store where customers are encouraged to touch and even test out gear, so kids this age will be in heaven.
School-Age Kids: Kids will feel at home in this store, with multiple levels (and excuses for elevator rides) and a chance to scale the rock climbing wall, test mountain bikes on the on-site trails, or brave the cool room to test sleeping bags.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Popular brands of outdoor gear and clothing are easy to find here, sure to make both fashion-conscious and active pre-teens and teens happy.
Planning Notes
- Conquer the store's "Pinnacle." This climbing surface was modeled after Colorado sandstone formations. Kids 48 inches or taller can try to scale it. REI members climb for free, non-members pay $10 for the first climb, $5 every subsequent try. Check their Web site for Pinnacle hours and prepare to wait in line on busy days.
- Picnic in Confluence Park. Located where the Platte River meets Cherry Creek, this is where a prospector found gold -- and Denver began.
