Colorado Railroad Museum Description

Located only 12 miles west of downtown Denver in Golden, the 15-acre Colorado Railroad Museum is a trainiac's delight. Roam the grounds on your own or take a guided tour, offered twice daily (call ahead to verify). The museum campus houses a gift shop, bookstore, and various exhibits, but there's also a Railroad Library and roundhouse in the process of complete restoration -- your brood can stand in the viewing gallery and watch volunteers restore old engines and cars. Kids will especially love the 20-minute rides on a narrow-gauge steam engine; call ahead or check the museum's Website to verify the schedule.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: This is the age of Thomas the Tank Engine, and kids hip to that show will delight in seeing an actual roundhouse and getting to ring a real bell inside an old steam engine.

School-Age Kids: Kids in this age group who are still into things that move will love the museum; kids who aren't will at least find it a novel experience and a glimpse into history.

Planning Notes

  • Bring your own snacks. There are picnic tables on the museum grounds, but no food services on site.
  • Dress casually. You'll be walking over train tracks, dirt and grass to view the various train cars and engines on display.
  • Call ahead. The museum relies on volunteers to lead tours, so check to see if one will be available. If not, there are self-guided tour handouts you can read to the kids as you explore the grounds.
  • Explore the store. Rail fans in your family will love the museum store and gift shop, which sells Thomas toys, DVDs, and books, as well as other train toys and memorabilia.
