Denver Zoo Description

Who doesn't enjoy a trip to the zoo? This one is on a par with other major national zoos, offering eager eyes the chance to view exotic wild animals up close and learn about conservation, habitat, and ecological diversity. Ride a carousel for $1, located in the heart of the zoo. Kids into "gross stuff" (also known as the "Animal Planet" set) will love watching the "man-eating" Komodo dragons in action (eating non-human foodstuffs, of course). Ride the Zoo Train for $2 at Pachyderm Park to learn more about the animals in residence.

Kid Tips

Babies: Even tiny tots might enjoy the colors and sounds of the animals. Bring a stroller so baby can ride or nap.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Little ones will love the chance to see their favorite creatures up close.

School-Age Kids: Educational information and programs will engage kids as much as getting to see the animals.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids with an interest in photography will enjoy capturing images of the zoo's colorful inhabitants.

Planning Notes

  • Visit the zoo's Website. You can also call to ask about feeding times for critters like the African penguins and gorillas.
  • Dress appropriately. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and hats, since you'll be out under the brilliant Colorado mountain sun.
  • Check out the extras. Unique demonstrations (sea lion show, pachyderm demo) run throughout the day; check the Website or call for a schedule of what extras to expect during your visit.
  • Open your wallet. The Conservation Carousel and Zoo Train cost extra, and kids often want a souvenir or snack at the cafeteria, so keep extra cash on hand.

The best time of year to visit the Denver Zoo is evenings during the winter holiday because they decorate with festive lights and animal sculptures -- they call the event Zoolights. Be sure to bundle up!

Our favorite animals here? The polar bears!Read More
