Royal Ontario Museum Description

"They're alive!" shrieked a 4-year-old when he came upon a working beehive in the museum. This is not your parent's museum. Hands-on activities, dress-up stations and touch screen devices that can take you from a dinosaur dig ("I found something!") to an armadillo's eye-view of the world and a nose to horn experience with an 11-foot-tall white rhino. Sure it's unlikely they'll read the information cards, but there's no denying the gleam in their eye that says they're having a great time.

Kid Tips

Babies: Paved paths, wide sidewalks and a waterfront trail make it a great place to take it all in with the baby.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Dinos don't get much larger than the Barosaurus, whose tail takes up several feet in the hall. Preschoolers may have to be physically removed from the movies depicting life amongst the dinosaurs on the easy-to-use touch screen modules

School-Age Kids: The Earth Rangers Studio in the Gallery of Bio Diversity has live animals and animal ambassadors who can explain their importance to the ecosystem. Kids love the up close and personal interaction with owls, lemurs and more.

Pre-Teens & Teens: With all the vampire movies out the bat cave — a dark tunnel with hundreds of lifelike ones on the ceilings and walls — might impress. If not head to the Egyptian room where nothing says "cool" like a real mummy.

Planning Notes

  • Pick and choose. There are plenty of options, but if you want to keep your sanity and minimize kiddie meltdowns pick a few sections of the museum and save the rest for your next visit.
