Musee de la Civilisation Description

The 4-year-old's mouth drops when the stone cat in the Egyptian room begins to talk. Miou is one of several interactive exhibits aimed squarely at kids. With giant touch-screen games and hands on-puzzles everyone has something to do. Downstairs a medieval setting offers costumes and plenty of props to play with. Use a lever to build a fortress or bake a realistic-looking plastic pie in the kitchen. Older kids will like the hands-on science exhibits that explain burning questions like how tornados form with more show than tell.

Kid Tips

Babies: The museum is fully accessible and boasts lots of quiet spots to relax with the baby while still being able to keep an eye on older kids.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Stools in front of the Earth exhibit are meant for these guys who may need the help to reach some of the levers inside.

School-Age Kids: Have them pick up an Egyptologist's diary near Miou and they can while away hours filling out the puzzles and answering the questions as they wander through the exhibit.

Pre-Teens & Teens: The Extraterrestrial Exhibit has just the right mix of information and scare factor to keep teens happy. Favorite movie aliens are explained and artifacts — like the lifesize alien from the "Aliens" movie franchise — have just the right gross factor appeal. Younger kids are less excited ,but the large, bright atrium space outside makes a good spot to wait it out.

Planning Notes

  • Head downstairs. Large tables and benches — often used by visiting school groups offer a great indoor snacking place. Or head outside to the roof where a roof garden offers a sunny summer alternative.
  • Lots of French. While most exhibits feature both official languages you will find spots where French rules. Kids may still get a kick out of some of the exhibits but be prepared for frustration if they can't figure it all out.
