Parc du Mont Royal/Mount Royal Park Description

Known to locals as "The Mountain," the park at Mont Royal was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, creator of New York City's Central Park. This is one of the best outdoor spots for families in all seasons. Rent paddleboats on Beaver Lake, tumble down the large grassy hill, enjoy the hiking trails, and climb on the play structures in the summer. During the winter the park is alive with ice skating, sledding, cross country skiing, and ice sliding on inner tubes. There's a permanent exhibit about the park at the Smith House and a café/restaurant with surprisingly palate-pleasing eats for the whole family.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Renting paddle boats is a big draw for this age group, as is the extensive playground and splashing in Beaver Lake. Your toddler may enjoy herself most, however, while joyfully running down the huge grassy hill.

School-Age Kids: Don't miss the daily shows, which include talks about insect sounds, insect architecture, and the Atta ants' gardening tactics.

Pre-Teens & Teens: The wintertime outdoor activities, especially ice sliding (inner tubes are available for rental) are not to be missed.

Planning Notes

  • Accessible by car or bus. If you drive, there's usually plenty of parking on Chemin Remembrance heading up from Cote-des-Neiges.
  • Call ahead for a Cavalry Tour. The police cavalry station offers tours that will thrill a youngster's heart, but you need to reserve a spot ahead of time (514-280-2777).
  • Bring a picnic. Dozens of shady spots and tables can be found around Beaver Lake and the Chalet.
  • Bring a bicycle. It's the best way to enjoy the 6.5 km of Olmsted Road.
