Montreal souterrain/Underground City Description

Nothing metrological fazes Montrealers—not snow, rain, sleet, or 110-plus degree weather. To cope with the long, cold winters and the hot, humid summers, Montrealers built the Underground City, which provides access to 309 food-court type restaurants, 9 hotels, banks, concert halls, 7 Metro stations, decorative fountains, a piece of the Berlin Wall, and more. The city stretches across 20 miles underground—if you know your way around it you can get to almost anywhere in Montreal without going to street level. Worth a visit even when the weather's nice (it's a phenomenon you've got to see to believe), you'll be grateful for the Underground City during lousy weather.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Let your preschoolers lead the way. They'll want to ride the elevators, drag their hands through the fountains, and stop for a drink as you explore.

School-Age Kids: Trinket and souvenir shops (of which there are plenty) with charming stationary and other things with French writing on it particularly pleases this age group.

Pre-Teens & Teens: When they tire of shopping, head to one of the three different ice skating rinks.

Planning Notes

  • Take a walk. One of the nicest things to do here is simply amble through a section near Old Montreal.
  • Visit the Berlin Wall. Ask your kids what they think about the two sides of it. Did the graffiti come from East or West Berlin?
