Saint Catherine Street Description
You'll notice as soon as you arrive in Montreal that people are more fashionably dressed than in the U.S. (mothers wear high heels as they push baby carriages, little boys wear their shirts nicely tucked in), and it's only natural that your family (especially if you're traveling with teens) will want to fit in. Head to Saint Catherine Street, the bustling, pulsating retail heart of Montreal, where there are dozens of shopping complexes, including the Eaton Center and The Bay (Montreal's oldest department store).
Kid Tips
Babies: The lights, bustle, and friendly folks make Saint Catherine a nice place to walk (and shop) with babies. It's best to leave your stroller behind, though, since it's often elbow-room only.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Saint Catherine is extremely popular with older kids. Steer yours past the gentlemen's clubs (which are always a surprise to American families but coexist here with retail outlets) and into the stores.
Planning Notes
- Prepare for crowds. Unless you go first thing in the morning, stores are often crowded.
- Take the Metro. Access to the malls and boutiques is available directly from the Metro stations without even going outside; also, parking in this area of town is hard to find.
- Not just for teens. There are so many stores to choose from, including numerous lovely cafés and restaurants, that the shopping here is good for the whole family.
