Musée des beaux-arts de Montreacute;al/Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Description

This one-hour thrill ride down the Lachine Rapids is an amazing way to experience firsthand the force of the St. Lawrence River. You'll hear the shrieks of passengers on the jet boats from the quays as they practice, and once onboard you are guaranteed to get startlingly drenched (you get protective gear and a briefing before you depart). The ride starts out on the calmer rapids, getting progressively more vertiginous as you go. Your only job is not to scream so loudly you fall out of the boat. Not for the faint of heart!

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Unless yours is a real daredevil and blinks calmly at the idea of 13-foot waves, this activity is best for children ages 9 and up.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Rapids with names like "The Nose Washer"; handsome, unflinching expert pilots; the smell of the lake air; and a wild ride. Need we say more?

Planning Notes

  • Watch before you go. The jet boat pilots practice beforehand to gauge the comfort level of those on board—have your kids watch them before you decide to do it. Once you're out on the water there's no turning back.
  • Close-toed shoes only. Even if it's hot, do not wear flip-flops or sandals—you may lose them.
  • Go when it's warm out. Though this activity is offered even in cool weather, you are going to get completely soaked. It's much more fun to go when the weather is hot.
  • Bring a change of clothes. You'll need dry underwear and shoes, too.
  • Make reservations in advance. There's nothing more disappointing for kids than mustering up the courage to go only to find that the boat is full.
