Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal Description
This is a wonderful museum for introducing kids to art, as the permanent exhibit is always free (donations welcome) and has enough to keep the family busy and intrigued for hours. Housed in two buildings, the museum has an impressive array of art, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculptures to ultra-contemporary paintings. Your family will especially like the nineteenth century European painters, who include so many children in their work that yours can't help but be intrigued.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Skip the original museum building and head across the street to where the more recent art is housed. Toddlers will enjoy the open floor plan and the long, shallow stairways, as well as the larger-than-life sculpture and wall-sized collages in the contemporary art section.
School-Age Kids: The outstanding temporary exhibits, ranging from the fashion of Yves Saint Laurent to the silk screens of Andy Warhol, are worth the admission price for this age group.
Planning Notes
- Lighten your load. Monitored cloakrooms are at the entrances to both buildings.
- Go on Sunday afternoon. Family Sundays throughout the spring and summer offer special programming, like urban landscape drawing and still-life workshops. Call ahead for dates.
