Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal/Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal Description
Built in 1829 and added to in the 1870s, the Notre-Dame Basilica has pine sculpted statues, gilded decorations, and gorgeous stained glass windows depicting scenes from Montreal's religious history. The blue and gold interior is so dazzling that your children's eyes will go wide with wonder. Your kids may not appreciate that the Basilica has some of the finest Gothic Revival architecture in North America, but they will love the spectacular multimedia "And Then There Was Light" show that highlights the Basilica's history, culture, and architecture.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids will appreciate the Basilica even more if they go first to the Point-à-Callière museum, where they'll learn about the importance of religion, Catholic missionaries, and the orphan girls of France who, under religious guidance, settled in Montreal.
Pre-Teens & Teens: History buffs may want to participate in the two-hour tour and lecture, which costs $12 and must be reserved in advance.
Planning Notes
- In Old Montreal. It's a great stop on your way to Place Jacques Cartier or the Port of Old Montreal.
- Take the Metro. Place d'Armes is just a block from the Basilica, but parking is very hard to find in this area of Old Montreal.
