Quais du Vieux-Port de Montréal/Quays of the Old Port of Montreal Description

With miles of paved roads alongside the St. Lawrence River, outstanding museums, and lovely green spaces, Montreal's Old Port is as full of history as it is of contemporary culture. Happy teens pedal like mad on surreys, awed school kids watch the jet boats practice before heading to the rapids, and toddlers swing their legs on park benches. Rent paddle boats in the summer or skates in the winter; visit museums; try a restaurant; or simply meander along the quays. Montreal's social and economic center since it came to life over 350 years ago, the Old Port is now a cultural and tourist Mecca, welcoming some 7 million visitors a year.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: While the museums at the Old Port—like the Science Centre and Point-à-Callière—have enough to keep this age group busy, spending time looking at the water, lolling on benches, and climbing on the sculpture of gigantic atoms outside will appeal the most.

Pre-Teens & Teens: If the weather's bad, head for the Labyrinth of Shed 16. If it's nice out and your teens want adventure, go for a ride down the St. Lawrence rapids.

Planning Notes

  • Expect crowds. When the weather's nice, all of Montreal (and her tourists) come out to enjoy the quays.
  • Bring the stroller, even a double. The paths are paved and they are all wide enough for a double stroller.
  • Don't try to do everything in one day. There's too much to see here to do it all in one day. Budget your time according to the weather and your kids' interests.
