Marché Jean-Talon/Jean-Talon Market Description

You can't visit Montreal without experiencing one of the wonderful open-air farmer's markets that sells fresh produce, unique products from Quebec (like sparkling apple cider, maple sugar maple-leaf-shaped lollipops, and mustard with wild mushrooms), and artisan cheeses and breads—of these markets Jean-Talon is the biggest and the best. Kids stay busy trying the free samples and ducking into the various specialty shops and bakeries. Don't miss Première Moisson, one of the best bakeries in Montreal, selling everything from strawberry-cranberry-hibiscus cake to crunchy peasant bread.

Kid Tips

Babies: Changing tables are available in the restrooms near the food court.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Start your visit at Première Moisson bakery with a special treat or chewy baguette and then head to other parts of the market.

School-Age Kids: The Italian-style ice cream can't be missed (the market is located in the heart of Montreal's Little Italy).

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will be intrigued by the fascinating products at Le Marché des Saveurs du Quéébec, a specialty food shop that sells chocolate-covered cranberries, blueberry pâté, pickled milkweed pods, maple marmalade, and more.

Planning Notes

  • Go hungry. Buy some of the delicious, fresh food and have a picnic afterwards, or sample one of the ethnic restaurants that line the market.
  • Try Quebec's cheeses. Several stores and stalls sell handmade cheeses. Try a hunk of St.-Guillaume or fresh goat cheese balls marinated in chives and grape seed oil.
  • Take the Metro. There's plenty of subterranean parking, but the market is just two quick blocks from Metro Jean-Talon.
