Jardin botanique de Montréal/Montreal Botanical Garden Description

The second largest botanical garden in the world (after London's Kew Gardens), Montreal Botanical Garden has the largest bonsai exhibit outside Japan and so many amazing gardens you can't see everything in one day. However long you spend, don't miss the carp and bridges in the Japanese Gardens and stone mountain's waterfall, pavilions, and display of Chinese instruments in the Chinese Gardens. The First Nations Settlement (a recreated northern hunting community), the Tree House (celebrating Quebec's forests), and miniature tram ride are also must-do's.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Kids 6-10 will appreciate the featured daily programs (offered in English and French) such as the Japanese tea ceremony and the bonsai demonstrations in the Chinese Gardens. Ask for a copy of the day's schedule as you enter.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Those with a botanical bent will want to spend time at the Tree House to learn about the trees of Quebec. All kids in this age group will enjoy the Chlorophyll Room in the Greenhouse.

Planning Notes

  • Buy a combination ticket. If you're planning to visit the Insectarium and Biodome as well, take advantage of the savings the combination ticket offers.
  • Parking costs extra. After parking, buy a pass ($10) to put in your car window.
  • Bring the stroller. There are paved paths throughout the park; a stroller will make it easier to cover a lot of territory.
  • Don't bring food. Picnics are only allowed on the benches outside the garden. There's a large restaurant with a good selection of sandwiches and pizza inside.
  • Consider a guided tour. Volunteer guides are on hand to walk you through the garden.
