Half Dome Description
A Yosemite icon, the Half Dome is easy to glimpse from around the Yosemite Valley, since the impressive granite crest rises more than 4,500 feet above the valley floor. You can admire the view from afar, or hike it -- which is seriously grueling and can take up to 12 hours or more to complete. In the summer and on holiday weekends, so many people attempt this hike that the wait to climb the last 900 feet -- 400 of which have steel cable "railings" to assist climbers -- can be up to an hour. It is one of the most popular hikes in the park, but it's best left for the experienced climbers.

- There's a safer option. Glacier Point is the best vantage point to see the Half Dome. Be sure to bring binoculars.
