Glacier Point Description

The view from the overlook at Glacier Point (with an elevation of 7200+ feet) is truly dizzying, with panoramic views of Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls and the High Sierra mountains in the distance. If your kids are intrepid hikers, the "Glacier Point to Yosemite Valley" hike on the Four Mile Trail (it's actually 4.8 miles) is a must. Take the "hikers' bus" from the Yosemite Lodge to Glacier Point (it's about a two-hour ride) and then hike back down.

If you're not up for a hike, but you want the view, you can drive to Glacier Point and then take an easy 1/4-mile walk to the overlook. The path is paved and stroller-accessible. If you have time, stop at Washburn Point, just before Glacier Point. From Washburn Point, you'll get amazing views of Half Dome, the Merced River Drainage, the Illilouette Creek drainage, the Clark Range, and the Cathedral Range -- a lot of reward for your effort!

Kid Tips

Babies: With your baby in a frontpack, the walk to the Glacier Point overlook is an easy one.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Even little ones can handle the short walk to the overlook.

Pre-Teens & Teens: If they're in good shape, they'll enjoy the spectacular views during the Glacier-Point-to -Yosemite-Valley hike.

Planning Notes

  • Go at sunset if you're driving. The view from Glacier Point is particularly gorgeous at sunset, so if you're driving rather than hiking, plan to visit then. It takes about an hour to drive from the valley floor to Glacier Point.
