Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad Description

Perfect for the railroad buffs in your family -- or anyone pooped from a day of hiking -- this steam train (think: blowing whistles and chugga-chugga sound effects) will take you on an hour-long scenic loop through the Sierra Nevada Forest. It's hard to imagine that more than 500 million feet of lumber were once logged out of this forest via such a narrow track. The other option is the Jenny Railcar, a "Model A" gas-powered engine with a passenger trolley on the back. It covers the same route as the Steam Train, but takes only 30 minutes.

Kid Tips

Babies: Take the Jenny Railcar for a quieter ride.

Toddlers & Pre-K: What's not to love? Thankfully, both trips are short enough for this age group's attention spans.

School-Age Kids: They may enjoy learning about a time when loggers and steam engines ruled the woods.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll enjoy the chance to take a load off, and to take pictures from the comfort of the train.

Planning Notes

  • Take a moonlit ride. A tradition at the railroad, moonlit rides run on Saturday nights in spring and fall, Saturday and Wednesday nights in summer. The evening begins with dinner and music. While on the ride, keep an eye out for "masked horsemen" in search of gold and valuables. Book in advance.
