Yosemite Museum and Indian Village Description
Thousands of years before the Spanish occupied California, Native Americans lived in villages all over the Yosemite Valley. The Yosemite Museum's exhibits shed light on the history (the last 150 years) of the Miwok and Paiute people, local native groups. In the reconstructed Indian Village of the Ahwahnee, just behind the museum, you'll find examples of traditional native dwellings, and even demonstrations of skills such as basket-weaving, beadwork, and traditional games.
Kid Tips
Babies: Both the museum and Indian Village are stroller-accessible.
Toddlers & Pre-K: The Native American history will be lost on them, but they'll be able to burn off energy running around the Indian Village.
School-Age Kids: They'll enjoy the displays of deerskin dresses and ceremonial dance costumes.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids this age may find the rather fierce history interesting. "Yosemite" means "those who kill," and was used by the Miwok tribe to describe the Paiute.
Planning Notes
- Grab a souvenir. The museum's gift shop has a nice selection of Native American arts and crafts.

What we loved:
The kids loved playing in the teepee
What we didn't love:
It was a little on the sparse side
It really made me count my lucky stars that I get to live in a time when there are microwave ovens and indoor plumbing. Read More
