San Diego Air and Space Museum Description

The San Diego Air and Space Museum is awesome even if you hate to fly. Staffed mostly by incredibly knowledgeable and helpful retired pilots, the museum has flight simulators, lots of history about flying in America, rocket ships, cockpits, model planes kids can climb on, and such extensive displays that you'll want to come back (sans children) to see them again.

  • Special Collection

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Check out the toy Gee Bee, a miniature of the airplane next to it that toddlers can climb in and pedal (great photo op); this age will also like the cut-out cockpits across from the Gee Bee, though their feet won't hit the ground.

School-Age Kids: The Flight Training simulation lets school-aged kids "fly" a real plane over San Diego while a museum volunteer teaches them about navigation. Very cool.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Check out how flight attendants used to dress! Teens interested in anything airplane- oriented will like this museum. They'll have a blast on the XJ-5 Motion Flight Simulator, a four-minute, action-packed ride in a fighter jet that rolls upside down; and at the Flight Adventure Center, which has eight computer stations with World War II combat flight simulators that can dogfight in the air.

Planning Notes

  • Bring a picnic. No food service is available in the museum but there are great spots to picnic in Balboa Park. Your ticket lets you come and go all day, so if the kids have a blood sugar meltdown, you can go outside for a snack.
  • Bring some cash. The flight simulators cost an extra $5, and you'll all want to try them.
  • Combine with another activity. The museum is a perfect place to visit after a puppet show or before a romp around the San Diego Zoo.
  • Buy tickets online. If you're on active duty in the military, your admission is free (bring ID) when you buy through the website.

Reviews of San Diego Air and Space Museum

Boy-friendly museum.

What we loved:
Boys love it.

Boys as young as three absolutely love it here. The jets and moon capsule are their favorite parts. Our friend's girl was not as interested, but I suppose any child into large mechanical things would enjoy it.Read More
