San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Description
This is the place to really experience San Francisco's seafaring past. Six of the seven wooden boats moored at the park's Hyde Street Pier are national landmarks, including the square-rigged Balclutha, built in Scotland in 1886, which has just returned after a $1.5 million restoration, and the C.A. Thayer, a lumber schooner built in 1895. The Maritime Museum, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is closed for renovations until 2009, but a maritime store and visitors' center is located at the entrance to the pier.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids will love the hands-on experience of shipboard life, from tiny galley kitchens to tightly packed bunks in the crew quarters.
Planning Notes
- Fun neighborhood. Allow time to wade in the bay at Aquatic Park and share a gigantic "earthquake" sundae at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory up the hill.
