La Jolla Shores Description
La Jolla Shores is easily one of the most family-friendly beaches in San Diego County. The city of La Jolla is often called San Diego's Riviera for its azure waters, outstanding views, and upscale homes overlooking the coast. The beach itself is on the edge of a ritzy neighborhood that provides street parking when the free parking lot is full, as well as excellent walks past beautiful houses. There are plenty of sandy places to play on and large grassy areas ideal for picnicking. Stay to the southern end of the beach if your family will be swimming or boogie boarding, as the area north of the checkered flag is restricted to surfing use. Kids will love watching the surfers carve waves and checking out the scuba divers preparing their gear on the lawns.
During summer, lifeguard stations extend down the whole beach, and the main tower is generally staffed throughout the year. Waves are smaller in the southern swimming area, but you should still check with lifeguards regarding rip currents. The white sand beaches are clean and well maintained, and bathrooms and showers are easy to find.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Many local teens hang out at The Shores on weekends, since it's a top surf spot.
Planning Notes
- Learn to surf. Numerous surf schools meet at La Jolla Shores throughout the year, and specialize in teaching beginners how to safely get out and have fun. Make reservations for your lesson before you go. Menehuene teaches ages kids 5 and older and adults. For an all-female learning environment, check out Surf Diva.
- Have a bonfire. There are numerous fire pits along the beach that are excellent for a family evening cookout during the summer. People tend to stake out the highly coveted pits from early in the morning, staying all they way through the day.
- Visit the Aquarium. Just up the hill from The Shores is the world-class Stephen Birch Aquarium, run by the local university's oceanographic institute.
