Rock Climbing Description

Take your family vacation to new heights by signing up for rock climbing lessons in spectacular Joshua Tree National Park (about an hour's drive from Palm Springs). Highly-skilled, certified guides provide individual instruction, all of the necessary equipment, and a big boost of encouragement, and kids are up and climbing in a flash. Kids will relish the experience, marveling at the visual perspective they gain from the climb and swelling with pride after ascending to heights they never thought possible.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids younger than 6 will enjoy scrambling over the low-lying boulders at the base of the rock formations while older siblings climb.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Make rock climbing in Joshua Tree a two-day event by signing up for Rock 101 and Rock 102 on consecutive days.

Planning Notes

  • Tailored climbs. Guides are selected and locations chosen based on the skills of the climbers, ensuring that each climber has a positive experience. Absolute beginners in particular will benefit from the guides' expert instruction.
  • Best for ages 6 and up. Although kids as young as 2 have climbed with Uprising, they recommend kids be 6 or older for an optimum experience.
  • Head, hands, feet. As the guides say, the most important part of the body during the climb is a focused mind, followed by agile hands and feet. Almost anyone can climb -- only average athletic ability is necessary.
  • Post-climb refreshment. Guides advise bringing water and energizing snacks for refueling between climbs. Head to the Crossroads Cafe and Tavern for hearty, healthy food and wonderfully cold smoothies when the climbing day is done.
