Cannery Row Description
Is it a historical landmark or a giant shopping mall? Well, a little of both, but Cannery Row, despite rows of touristy T-shirt shops, is still a lot of fun. My kids loved the funky old signs, the exhibits with historic photos, and narrow alleys (you can still visit "Doc's" marine laboratory on the pier, immortalized in Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row). But they also loved the artsy-craftsy boutiques selling trendy hats and glittery jewelry. Sort of like Claire's and Forever 21 meets Ellis Island.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Depending on the time of year, there are outdoor festivals and concerts designed to appeal to preteens and teens. On New Year's Eve, Monterey hosts a First Night celebration with free live music throughout the town.
Planning Notes
- On a tight schedule, go after dinner. Since most of these stores stay open into the evening, you can squeeze a Cannery Row visit in after dinner if your days are packed with whale watching and trips to Carmel and Salinas.
