Santa Monica Pier & Pacific Park Description

As if screaming down the rails of a rollercoaster isn't exciting enough, here you can do it with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. The big rides for big kids -- like a rising-and-falling yellow submarine and jumbo Ferris wheel -- are also complemented by easier stuff for the little guys (mini bumper cars, a jeep ride, an historic carousel). The pier is known for its very loud arcade and hit-the-clown, win-a-stuffed-animal kind of games. In other words, it's kid heaven. Down below is a boardwalk that runs along the beach for miles; bike and skate rentals are available.

  • Amusement Park

  • Bicycling

Kid Tips

Babies: The pier and boardwalk are both very stroller-friendly.

Toddlers & Pre-K: They'll especially love the carousel.

School-Age Kids: The arcades will make 'em nuts (especially if they're into video games).

Pre-Teens & Teens: The pier will go over big with kids this age, from the rides to the arcade to the great people-watching.

Planning Notes

  • The warmer the weather, the more crowded the pier. There's parking right on and next to the pier, but if you choose to go on a summer weekend you might consider the using one of the several public parking lots alongside the nearby Third Street Promenade shopping center. You have to walk a short distance, but it's better than sitting in traffic (cheaper, too).
  • Food options. There are plenty of restaurants on the pier, ranging from junky fast food to sit-down restaurants specializing in Mexican food or seafood. Nothings that terrific, but there are also lots of places to eat at the Third Street Promenade.
  • Here fishy fishy fishy. At the bottom of the pier there's a little aquarium with touch tanks.

Just the Facts

Hours: Pier is always open; amusement park: 10 a.m.-midnight; 10 a.m.-2 a.m., Fri.-Sat. (opens at 9 in the summer; carousel is closed Tue.-Wed.)

Fees: $10 - $20

Recommended Time: 2 to 4 hours

Reviews of Santa Monica Pier & Pacific Park

Love the Ferris Wheel

What we loved:
The view ... we could see the coast, catalina, the city

The structure was so massive, we felt really safe being up so high, even my son, who is scared of heights.Read More

Even the view looking up was cool
