Santa Monica Surf School Description

Santa Monica Bay is a great place for kids to learn how to surf -- the waves rarely get too big and the current isn't as strong as at other Southern California beaches. If your stay is long enough, you might want to sign your child up for a 4-day camp or if your child (or you) just wants to get his feet wet (so to speak), this outfitter gives two-hour lessons all year long. They'll provide the board, wetsuit and instructors who are longtime surfers. You just need to show up on this expansive beach and get ready to dive in.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: While this outfitter has taught kids as young as 5, most kids don't start surfing until age 7 or older.

Pre-Teens & Teens: If they can eventually stand up on the board, they'll earn bragging rights for months to come.

Planning Notes

  • Civilization is never far. The lessons take place at a beach that has a snack bar and is just off Main Street in Santa Monica, a strip with boutiques and restaurants.
  • Bring towels and snacks. The water is cold (even in summer it's a little chilly) and kids really work up an appetite.
