Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens Description

While this former estate of a railway magnate has a world-class manuscript and art collection, your kids will probably prefer to stay outdoors in the botanical gardens -- a vast, landscaped paradise. Little ones love running through the desert garden and checking out the turtles in the Japanese garden, while parents savor the rose and Shakespeare gardens.

Kid Tips

Babies: This is relaxing place to bring a baby in a sling or stroller.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The highlight for this set is the children's garden, which is mostly a clever collection of water features. This is a great place for letting kids work off excess energy while you enjoy the splendid beauty.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They might be a little bored, but the gardens are so spectacular that they might change their minds.

Planning Notes

  • Take a drive or walk around the neighboring streets. The Huntington is in the middle of a gorgeous residential neighborhood.
  • Dress for heat. San Marino (which is next to Pasadena) can be much hotter than the rest of Los Angeles.
  • Admission is free on the first Thursday of every month. However, it's so crowded that it's a toss up as to whether or not it's worth the savings. You may find that you have to park a half-mile away.
  • There's a lovely tea room at the Huntington and a pretty good cafe. Delightful as it could be, there's no picnicking allowed on the grounds.
  • Bring extra clothes for your child. She's guaranteed to get wet in the Children's Garden, but if it's summer they'll dry quickly in San Marino's warm temps. And make sure your child's shoes can withstand water -- going barefoot is not allowed.
