Mann's Chinese Theater Description

This grand theater's place in film history may be lost on young kids, but they'll still get a kick out of seeing all the famous footprints in cement. You can take a tour of the interior, which opened in 1927 and was built with imported artifacts from China. Or take in a movie: The theater still operates and usually shows pretty family-friendly flicks. Kids can leave the gift shop with their own Oscar.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young ones may not enjoy the crowds found here on weekends and holidays.

School-Age Kids: They'll get a kick out of the "movie stars" (costumed characters like Darth Vader, Superman, and Marilyn Monroe) strolling around in front of the theater.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids this age will appreciate the theater's glamour as experienced on the tour.

Planning Notes

  • Hollywood is a little on the "funky" side. Be aware that the theater’s neighborhood -- despite the presence of an upscale mall called Hollywood & Highland right next door -- is still in the process of gentrifying.
  • Take a walk. The sidewalks all along Hollywood Boulevard are covered in the Walk of Fame stars, so plan on strolling for a few blocks with your eyes fixed on the ground.
  • Plenty of dining options to be had. There are restaurants and quick eats at Hollywood & Highland and a California classic, Mel’s Drive-In, around the corner.
  • Call ahead if you plan to take a tour. If a movie is premiering there that day, tours are canceled.

Walking in the Stars' Footprints

What we loved:
The girls loved seeing all the stars -- even the ones they didn't know.

What we didn't love:
Too many people, but what can you do?

I think they would have stuck their hands in every hand- and footprint, if we'd had the time. Funny, we'd just gone to a Fourth of July tribute to John Wayne at the Hollywood Bowl the night before and they had no idea who he was. After I told them, they just shrugged. But they sure got a kick out of all the old-time stars when they could get up close and touch the names themselves. Hands-on wins out, hands down.Read More
