Travel Town Transportation Museum Description

This is paradise for kids who have a thing for Thomas the Tank Engine or who simply appreciate trains. They get the run of what is essentially a train yard and are allowed to climb on engines, thread their way through dining cars and ogle freight cars. There's also a little museum with old cars and the biggest miniature train set imaginable (alas, it's behind glass, but still very cool to look at).

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The highlight for younger kids is the mini train ride, complete with a real conductor. Truth be told, the ride isn't all that scenic (it parallels the freeway at one point), but the 6- and-under set seem to eat it up.

School-Age Kids: Most will still get a charge out of being able to run in and out of real trains.

Pre-Teens & Teens: This is really a place for young children. Older kids, unless they're real train buffs, might find it too babyish.

Planning Notes

  • This is a great place to picnic. There are lots of tables -- and a bare-bones snack bar.
  • You'll have the run of the place. The space is wide open so crowds really aren't a problem.
  • Make a day out of it. Travel town is also a hop and skip from the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Garden, which is a great facility -- very manageable in size and pretty well outfitted (the orangutans are fantastic and the gorillas have a new reserve).
  • Throw in a pony ride while you're at it. Toddlers and preschoolers in particular might appreciate a visit to the pony rides and second miniature train over on the other side of Griffith Park. There's also a great playground in the middle of the park.
  • Make sure they wear sturdy shoes. All the kids love to run up and down the (inactive, of course) railroad tracks.

What we loved:
Hands-on, touch everything, climb to your hearts content

This little park is one of the gems of Los Angeles. You do not need to be a four year old boy to have a great time here. Even grown ups seem to enjoy climbing on board these trains and exploring the train yard. Plus there are picnic tables with lovely spots to gather around while the kids run in and around the trains. Lots of people gather on weekends for birthday parties so it can get a bit crowded on warm Saturday afternoons. Read More
