San Luis Obispo Downtown Farmer's Market Description
Laying proud claim to the title of the "original" farmer's market, San Luis Obispo's lively Thursday night market, held all year, is still one of the best nationwide and a model that towns across the country have followed. But don't expect a quiet, farm-centric event; this lively night market is more like a colorful street fair. Yes, farmers come from miles around to show off the freshest most exotic produce and bakers have tables piled high with fresh loaves and treats, but that's just the beginning; kids will marvel at the handmade toys, jewelry, and other crafts on display and sit entranced as jugglers, magic acts, clowns, and other street artists perform eye-popping tricks. At least three stages surround the closed-off streets with bands playing blues, jazz, bluegrass, and all types of live music. The food stalls offer every imaginable gourmet treat; the two barbecued ribs stands are so popular that lines can extend around a full city block. Planning Notes
- Treat the family with garage parking. With the central streets cordoned off, parking can be a serious problem at the Thursday night market, but there are plenty of nearby garages. They aren't expensive, and using a garage will make it much easier to get back to the car at the end of the evening with dead-tired kids whose feet are sore from dancing.
