ATV Dune Riding Description

ATV-ing, a sort of modern variation on dune buggies, has become one of the main reasons people visit Oceano, just south of Pismo Beach. The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is one of only a few in the state that allow all-terrain vehicles, and the only place you can ride on the beach itself. You can rent two-, three-, and four-wheel ATVs from a number of storefronts along the Oceano Pier, which is also the entrance to the Dunes, and they can explain how the whole system works.

Kid Tips

Pre-Teens & Teens: This activity is only appropriate for kids who already have solid bike riding skills and are comfortable with daredevil thrills, so age 11 and older would be the limit, and it's most popular with high schoolers.

Planning Notes

  • Kids under 18 must be accompanied by parent. A special release form is required and safety certificate is required.
  • Helmets are required. So don't worry that your child will try to ride without one.
