Junkanoo Mini-Museum and Educulture Bahamas Ltd. Description

This small but lively museum deserves to be on every Nassau visitor's itinerary for the window it offers into the music, dance, and culture of the Bahamas, which can remain mysterious to the average resort visitor. Junkanoo is to the Bahamas what Mardi Gras is to New Orleans: an over-the-top festival of music, dance, and glittering, towering, multicolored costumes. And it's all here—crammed floor to ceiling with colorful costumes, musical instruments, and crafts. Junkanoo has also become synonymous with the music of the Bahamas, an afro-Caribbean meld of pounding drums and clanging cowbells; in the course of an hour-long visit, kids get to join in a Junkanoo jam.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The layout is a bit too cramped and the activities too sophisticated for kids under 3, but 3- and 4-year-olds will love the crafts, music jams, and other participatory activities.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids may at first feel that this is too "babyish" for them, but have them try on a few headdresses for photos and they'll soon join in the good time.

Planning Notes

  • Contact the museum in advance for hours and days. This museum is a popular stop for groups and tours; if you're coming by yourself, call first to make sure it's open. Tours are often scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
  • Dress-up time for the whole family. Don't miss the opportunity to try on some of the insanely elaborate get-ups displayed from past Junkanoo parades -- it's the ultimate photo opportunity.
  • Ask for Arlene. The museum is the life work of local historian Arlene Nash Ferguson, who's an in-demand tour guide with the popular tour service Educulture Bahamas.
