Fort Fincastle and Water Tower Description
The fort is a must-see on any tour of central Nassau simply for the 360-degree view of the island from its vantage point at the top of Bennet's Hill. Of course, it helps to have a tour guide who can bring the island's bloody history of slave rebellions, pirate attacks, and sunken galleons full of treasure to life, so listen closely to those who wait to walk you to the viewpoint at the top. (Tips appreciated.) Note the historic Water Tower on the way up, built with funds provided by the U.S. government to reward the Bahamas for Nassau's role in storing bootleg liquor during Prohibition. An elevator takes you to the top of the Water Tower for an even better view.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: There are many places to stumble and fall here, so if you have a toddler who's still unsteady on her feet, carry her or use a backpack.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Everyone should see the view from Fort Fincastle, but teens may bore easily; if so, they can go down and shop at the market stalls that surround the fort.
Planning Notes
- Combine this with Queen's Staircase. While worth seeing, Fort Fincastle and the Water Tower are just a quick stop, so combine with the Queen's Staircase (a great way to get there) and finish with a visit to the Pirates of Nassau or the Junkanoo Mini-Museum.
