Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour of Historic Nassau Description
Absolutely the best—and most authentic—way to tour central Nassau is riding in a horse-drawn carriage (or surrey). It's fun, historically accurate, and you get the benefit of a breeze to beat the heat and humidity. A carriage also allows you to avoid the traffic backed up on Bay Street, since many of the most direct routes through historic Nassau are tiny cobblestone lanes too narrow for tour buses and all but the smallest cars.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Unless the horse is ornery, the driver will let kids pet the horse and possibly give the horse a treat, so bring an apple or ask if the driver has any treats with him.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Let older kids skip this one if they aren't into it; it's a slow ride and will seem interminable if you're sitting next to a pouty teen. Horse-lovers will enjoy it, though.
Planning Notes
- Choose your tour guide wisely. The Bahamas are a storyteller's dream. Pirates, rum-running, and midnight massacres run though the islands' history like threads on a loom. As you approach the line of carriages parked by the curb, listen to the drivers as they tout their tours, and choose one who seems ready to revel in the most bloodthirsty tales.
