Snorkeling
Snorkeling: Bahamas Tour Center Description
The waters of the Bahamas are justly famous for their unearthly aquamarine color and astonishing clarity. (It's said an astronaut commented that from space the waters of the Bahamas are the most beautiful sight on earth.) Good snorkeling abounds on beaches all around the island; the most popular ones, such as Cable Beach and Sandyport, tend to have shallow slopes and plenty of fish-tempting coral-covered rock formations not far offshore, making them perfect for beginning snorkelers to try out the experience. For the Technicolor sea life of coral reefs, most people head for the Gambier Reef, Rose Island Reefs, Booby Rock Channel, the Goulding Reef Cays, and some easily seen, well-known underwater wrecks that lie in shallow water.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Unless your little one is a champion swimmer, you'll need to wait a few years before teaching him to snorkel, and of course with a baby one of you will be stuck on the beach. But small-sized masks can help toddlers and preschoolers learn to put their faces in the water.
School-Age Kids: Even non-swimmers and timid swimmers can snorkel by standing in shallow water and bending down.
Planning Notes
- Bring equipment from home or buy there. You can bring your own fins, mask, and breathing tube or buy them on the island in the gift shops of resorts such as the Sheraton Cable Beach. Outfitters provide equipment so you don't need to bring anything except a waterproof camera.
- Group trips. If you haven't snorkeled before or don't want to venture out alone, ask at your hotel about local guides and group snorkel trips, available from all hotels and guest houses. Another good outfitter is Flying Cloud Catamaran Cruise.
