Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, and Conservation Center Description
This lush, vine-draped garden offers hours of quirky entertainment thanks to the exotic critters housed here, many of which roam free throughout the grounds. It's worth a visit just for the sight of a huge flock of bright pink flamingos running in formation to join the "march of the flamingos," summoned by the sound of a trumpet. Kids also love hand-feeding the lorikeets with pieces of orange, and get a kick out of watching the amusing habits of jaguars, lemurs, and iguanas. The layout offers a chance to get closer viewing than at most city zoos.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Animal-loving little kids will adore the nutty flamingos that stroll loose about the grounds, as well as the peacocks.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will think the flamingo performance is hokey, but will like feeding the lorikeets and taking photos of themselves with birds on their heads. There are even enough scary reptiles to keep "tough guys" happy.
Planning Notes
- Time your visit to include events. The lorikeet feedings are at 11 a.m., and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. At those times only, visitors are allowed inside Lory Landing, where you can purchase fruit slices that entice the colorful birds to eat out of your hand. Hilarious performances by the "world famous" marching flamingos are at 10:30 a.m., and 2:10 and 4:10 p.m.
