Deer Valley Rock Art Center Description
Handed an activity sheet that turns hiking trails into a kind of scavenger hunt for rock art, kids get engrossed in the center as soon as they arrive. Even those too young to pronounce "petroglyph" get into the act by recording the rock art they've seen and noting what each symbol looks like to them. After the tour, they exchange their completed activity sheets for a prize. Special events include the Hedgepeth Hills Winter Festival, which features crafts, storytelling, and a farmer's market.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Check out the Ollie's Storybook program (named after the center's mascot), which runs each fall for children ages 3 to 6.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will definitely get into the pictures drawn by civilizations that lived here many centuries ago. Bring back photos to totally impress history teachers.
Planning Notes
- Get a guide. The full-time staff includes a public educator who's available to give guided tours tailored to individual families' needs. Group guided tours, offered from October through April on select Saturdays at 10 a.m., are free with regular museum admission.
- Prep for a hike. There are no shops or eateries, so bring bottled water along with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
