Phoenix Zoo Description

Special events are the highlight at the Phoenix Zoo. Activities range from breakfast with the turtles to animal shows staged in the small amphitheater, where you'll see acts like a bird that's been trained to pick up trash. Family-friendly activities also include pedal-boat outings on the lake. If you visit during the summer, take advantage of extended hours designed to help you avoid the midday heat, and popular draws like the Friday night Starry Safari events.

Kid Tips

Babies: Single and double strollers are available to rent. The zoo offers early childhood programs for babies as young as six weeks.

School-Age Kids: Kids ages 5 and up will go crazy over special programs like Night Camp, where kids can experience the zoo after dusk, and Critter Camp, which teaches them that caring for those cute animals is a really big job.

Planning Notes

  • Stow your stuff. A limited number of lockers are available at the zoo entrance.
  • BYO food. You may bring coolers, ice chests, and your own food to the zoo.
  • Roll on. Roller blades and bicycles are permitted for use while visiting the zoo. No skateboards or scooters, though. Bike rentals are available on-site.
  • Photography tips. The zoo offers tips on getting the best animal pictures on their Website (http://www.phoenixzoo.org/learn/animals/photo_tips.shtml).
  • Plan ahead for the holidays. Tickets to ZooLights, which uses 2.5 million lights to create hundreds of lighted animals and other displays, go on sale in October for the holiday season. Carousels, camel rides, and other attractions make it even more fun.
