Hiking
Rim Trail Description
For full, sweeping canyon views, nothing beats the aptly named Rim Trail, which follows the canyon rim from close to Kolb Studio in Grand Canyon Village to Hermit's Rest. The full hike is 12 miles long, but don't let the distance put you off. Since it follows the shuttle route, you can choose to hike as much or as little as your kids can manage, hopping on and off at various viewpoints. And those viewpoints are among the most dramatic ones anywhere in the canyon.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids this age won't last long, so look at a map in advance and plan which parts of the trail you'll want to hike -- several of the viewpoints are less than a mile from each other. Take the shuttle for the longer distances between viewpoints.
Planning Notes
- Plan ahead. Part of the route is shaded, but make sure to bring plenty of water, as there are no fountains or water available for purchase along the trail. You can buy water in the Grand Canyon Village area and at the end of the trail, at Hermit's Rest. Bring snacks to keep your energy up, and apply sunscreen liberally.
