Downtown Bicycle Rental and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail Description

Looking for adventure in the city? Put bicycling at the top of your itinerary. The folks at Downtown Bicycle Rental will help each kid and grownup find the perfect bike, plus helmets, maps, and water bottles for the ride. Five blocks away, you'll find the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an easy paved trail that hugs the water and sees more than its share of moose. Photo ops abound, and kids will love stopping to throw rocks in the water, look for salmon, and romp in grassy parks.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Rent a bike trailer and bring books, toys, snacks, and other amusements. The first two miles of the trail include plenty of spots where younger kids can get out and run around.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids who can go the distance can choose a return route that includes lunch out and a bus trip (with mounted bike). Bring money to keep their options open!

Planning Notes

  • Plan your distance. The trail is 11 miles one way; 22 miles round trip, with a fairly steep hill at the end of the trail. But it's an "out-and-back" trail rather than a loop, so you can go as far your family likes, then turn around and head back. See the map and other info here.
  • Don't overpack. Downtown Bicycle Rentals will give you a bike repair kit and pannier, or bike bag. But space is limited, so pack wisely.
  • Bring a camera. Chances are good you'll see moose and other wildlife.
  • Bring or buy snacks and water. The trail doesn't pass any stores or coffeeshops until the very end, so unless you plan to go the distance, be prepared with refreshments.
  • Wear bug spray. Mosquitos are abundant, especially in late spring and early summer.
  • After-hours bike dropoff is available. If you're tackling a longer trail or planning to take your time, ask about after-hours dropoff (a small fee may apply).
