Scenic Train Ride With Alaska Railroad Description

Anchorage is a great jumping-off point for fabulous day trips to Seward, Denali, Fairbanks, and more. Rather than driving, take a train ride through the scenic Alaskan wilderness. On-board tour guides narrate the wildlife, glaciers, and mountains you'll see through large windows and domes, and kids will love looking for moose, eagles, and beavers. Hungry families will enjoy the snacks and full service dining car, while nappers appreciate the comfortable, reclining seats. Open-air viewing platforms make the journey extra exciting, especially when the train whistle blows.

Kid Tips

Babies: Children younger than 2 ride free if they're traveling on an adult's lap. Car seats aren't required. Strollers can be checked with your luggage, or if they fold up, brought on board.

School-Age Kids: Scenery and wildlife sightings can be spectacular, but be prepared with books and travel toys like those you would use on a plane.

Planning Notes

  • Bring photo ID. Similar to airline travel, passengers 18 and older need a government-issued photo ID to board the train.
  • Check in an hour ahead of time. Even if you received your tickets ahead of time, you'll still need to show your ID and get your boarding passes. You can also check any luggage you might have with you.
  • Check your luggage. Passengers can check up to two pieces of luggage and bring a personal item on board the train.
  • Bring a camera. You'll see glaciers, mountain passes, and wildlife galore.
  • Don't worry about food. A full service dining car is available, as well as snacks.
