Alaska Native Heritage Center Description

There's truly something for everyone at this must-see tribute to Native Alaskan life and history. Small children can make-and-take painted pictures, masks, and other art projects in the Art Adventure area, school-age kids will love running along the wide gravel paths connecting 26 acres of hands-on outdoor exhibits and even the most jaded teens will enjoy the native dance and game demonstrations at the indoor "Gathering Place." Native Alaskan guides encourage kids to ask questions as they touch and explore, while on-site artists demonstrate various crafts.

Kid Tips

Babies: Babes in arms will get lots of fresh air and perhaps sleep peacefully while parents take a lovely half-mile stroll around the pond behind the Heritage Center.

Toddlers & Pre-K: After exploring the grounds, head for the Art Adventure area in the back of the Center. Kids can touch and explore the textures of objects including various animal skins, color or paint, and make projects like masks and snow goggles.

Planning Notes

  • No car? No problem. During the summer, a free shuttle takes visitors to the Sheraton, the Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Visitors Center, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Check the Heritage Center Web site for the most current schedule.
  • Eat lunch here. The Raven's Call Café offers kid-friendly lunch options like cheese sandwiches and burgers, plus more adventurous fare like reindeer burgers. Vegetarian options are limited, though. The Drum Circle is a second, smaller café with ice cream, cookies, and other snacks.
  • Buyer beware. The gift shop sells lovely high-end art and other unique gifts, but can be challenging for small children.
  • Discount passes available. The Alaska Culture Pass is a discount admission Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
