Alaska Museum of Natural History Description
Dinosaur fans and rock hounds alike will dig this interactive museum, home of Alaska's largest exhibits of rocks, minerals and rare fossils. North America's oldest duckbill dinosaur lives here, as do lots of other dino bones and specimens that kids can actually touch. Large dioramas make it easy for kids to imagine how native Alaskans survived harsh winters without modern tools or technology. Kids will also enjoy the gift shop, where they'll find polished rocks and other unique souvenirs for their treasure boxes.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Younger kids will have a blast at "Tinker Time," held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m.-noon. Drop-ins are fine and admission for kids younger than 6 are free. Snacks are encouraged!
School-Age Kids: Check out the Summer Activity Series, with hands on workshops about topics like glaciers, volcanos, dinosaurs and whales.
Planning Notes
- Private tours are available. Call ahead to arrange a personal tour of the museum— a great way for super-knowledgeable kids to ask questions and get the inside scoop.
- Print activity sheets from the Web site. Look online for lots of dinosaur facts and trivia, plus a virtual exploding volcano.
- Eat before or after your visit. Dining options are scarce here, so grab a bite in downtown Anchorage beforehand.
