Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum Description
Airplane buffs of all ages will find lots to enjoy at this hands-on museum. Indoor galleries are jam-packed with World War II artifacts and memorabilia from the planes and bush pilots that make life possible in many parts of rugged Alaska. Machine-oriented teens will love the Restoration Hangar, where they can watch volunteers painstakingly restore old planes, while outdoor exhibits make it easy for antsy kids to get their ya yas out. Don't overlook the gift shop, with unique souvenirs such as old aircraft instruments.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Kids who love airplanes will be plenty engaged by the indoor exhibits. Kids who like video games more than airplanes will enjoy taking off, flying and landing in the flight simulator.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids who've studied World War II in school may be surprised at how much they don't know about Alaska's role in the war.
Planning Notes
- Eat before or after your visit. The Aviation Museum has no cafe or picnic tables for brown-baggers, so visit between meal times.
- Go after 10 a.m. The exhibits in the "Restoration Hangar" are open during regular museum hours, but if you'd like to see the restoration specialists at work, go in the mid- to late-morning.
- Make this your last vacation stop. The Museum is located near the Anchorage Airport, convenient for last minute sight-seeing.
