The Driskill Hotel Description
A doomed bride might seem like an unlikely pitch woman for a hotel, but older kids love the tale of the unfortunate fiancee -- a woman who, after being left at the altar, mysteriously perished at this hotel and continues to haunt it. Such sightings have made the building a staple on city hotel tours, and kept visitors coming back Halloween after Halloween. Spirits aren't the only reason to stay at this 1886 grand dame. Plush, over-the-top decor (check out the steer head in the lounge) is vintage Texas, reflecting the spirit of Jesse Lincoln Driskill, the cattle baron who built it.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: A second grader might not be so enamored of sharing digs with a ghost. Save that little tidbit for the light of day -- or after you leave.
Planning Notes
- Get special rates. The hotel often features special packages around holidays, especially Halloween.
- Visit off peak. Quiet months, like November, are often great times to get deeply discounted room rates.
- Enjoy the ambience. The breakfast at the 1864 Café and Bakery is exceptional. Another good choice: afternoon tea in the parlor.
