Hotel Beacon Description

The Hotel Beacon is notable for many reasons, but the top one may be its location in the residential, tree-lined Upper West Side. A former apartment building that was converted to a hotel in the 1990s, the Beacon is blocks from Central Park to the east and Riverside Park to the west, and in walking distance to the Children's Museum and the Natural History Museum. Rooms are reasonable (for New York), and not motel-room bland. A family can fit in a double with two beds, with plenty of room leftover for a portable crib (and that's saying a lot; many Manhattan hotel rooms barely have walking space). All rooms have kitchenettes with microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, and kettle. There's no room service, but that hardly matters when coffee shops and moderately priced restaurants (not tourist traps) fill the neighborhood.

Planning Notes

  • Eat at home. Go across the street to the famous Fairway market, with its dizzying array of food and produce and its straw-covered floor, and stock up on breakfast items, snacks, or picnic food.
  • Higher is better. Ask if you can get a room on an upper floor: Since the Beacon is taller than its neighbors, you can get a pretty nice view of the Hudson River.
