The Hotel Lagunita Description
An hour away by taxi, the tiny fishing village of Yelapa is centuries away in time. Most people do Yelapa as a snorkeling day trip, so staying to spend a night allows you to experience the lapping waves, starry skies, and superlative sunset with the beach almost to yourself. How soon do we get to come back? Was the question I was pestered with over and over at Hotel Lagunita. The reason? One or even two nights isn't enough to take in all this family friendly eco-resort offers. Snorkels and kayaks await any time you want them. (And the clear, aqua water is great for tropical fish spotting.) The crystal clear pool is studded with big boulders that make for great jumping and splashing concerts. And the village of Yelapa itself offers cute cafés, a baker who patrols the pier with fresh-baked pie, and a dramatic waterfall just a 20-minute walk or donkey ride up the hill. And yes, you can swim under the waterfall, too.
Planning Notes
- Go off-season.Hotel Lagunita is understandably popular and has a lot of repeat customers (some families book the same week there every year), so it can fill up months in advance during high season, October to April. If you wish to go then, book as far in advance as possible. The rooms are open-air with mosquito netting around the beds. Make sure you have plenty of mosquito repellent and if you are bug-averse, bring ant/cockroach spray if you're going during the rainy season.
