Lapa Rios Eco-lodge Description
All you have to tell the kids is this: You'll be staying in a private nature reserve where toucans and scarlet macaws flit through the trees; monkeys steal your leftovers at breakfast; and a night hike will take you deep into the jungle where you might spot a jaguar, a neon-colored frog, or a deadly viper swimming in a stream. Or you can use shorthand: Lapa Rios is like going on safari without sacrificing delicious food and a comfortable bed. The dining room even features a dramatic circular ladder leading up to a 360-degree bird-viewing deck high up under the eaves. Environmentally conscious kids — and that's most of them, these days — will also appreciate the resort's high marks for environmental friendliness, from a solar-heated pool to produce grown right onsite. But the best part is definitely the hilarious antics of the spider and white-faced capuchin monkeys — they're everywhere!
Planning Notes
- Book ahead.Lapa Rios is so popular that it's sometimes necessary to book months in advance, at least in high season.
- Peace and quiet. A true eco-lodge, the staff picks you up at the tiny airstrip and drives you 45-minutes into the jungle — and 45 minutes from the phone and Internet, too. Parents of Facebook and game-addicted kids will love the respite from technology — a chance to have your child's undvided attention for a few days!
