The Ahwahnee Lodge Description
Stay at the Ahwahnee Lodge, and you'll guarantee that your family talks about this trip for years to come. It's unquestionably a splurge, but with good reason: it's a national historic landmark, and surely one of the most spectacular resorts in the country. It features a granite and "redwood" façade (it's actually cement treated to look like wood, for fire-safety reasons), massive stone hearths, and Native American artwork. The hotel sits right at the foot of the Royal Arches, so the view is breathtaking, too.
Planning Notes
- Book well in advance; the Ahwahnee is almost always fully booked. If you're planning to visit during summer or on a weekend, plan to reserve your room about a year in advance; during the off-season, call three to six months ahead.
- Drop by for a visit, even if you're not staying. If you're not a guest of the hotel, you can still visit several public rooms and warm your toes by a fire in the lobby.
- Plan for a late check-in. The Ahwahnee's check-in time is 5 p.m. (check-out is 11 a.m.) so plan your day accordingly.
- Dress up for dinner. In the hotel's main dining room, "proper attire" -- e.g., jacket-and-tie -- is required for dinner, but casual dress is allowed during the day.
- Expect small rooms. The Ahwahnee is family-friendly, but because it was built in the 1920s, the rooms are on the small side.
