Hotel del Coronado Description
A favorite resort of Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz," the Hotel Del (as it's known affectionately by locals) is a feat of whimsical Queen Anne architecture. When your children, however jetlagged or sick of sightseeing they may be, look into the hotel lobby, their eyes will go wide with wonder. Even if you don't stay at the Del, it's worth visiting for the boutique shopping, bike rentals, or just to see this lovely historic monument.

Toddlers & Pre-K: If you stay at the hotel, your kids can participate in the organized summer and holiday activities, but what they'll really want to do is make sandcastles on the miles of serene beach in Coronado. If you're just visiting, take a ride in the old-fashioned elevator and check out the ballroom.
Pre-Teens & Teens: There's ice skating by the sea in December, as well as dinner theater that teens will enjoy. Coronado is a place you can let the older kids explore by themselves without having to worry.
Planning Notes
- Visit Coronado. Situated just across the water from San Diego, Coronado is a city of some 26,000 residents with one of the most kid-friendly libraries in San Diego. Combine window shopping at the Del with a stroll around Coronado, which also has great parks and unique eateries.
- Look at the Del from the water's edge. To experience the full force of its architecture, go down to the beach and look back at the hotel. It's breathtaking.
