Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor Description
Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor has been operating at the same location in the Strip District since 1923, and it still has that old-fashioned feel, with the original marble countertop, soda fountain, and treats like egg creams and cherry phosphates. Kavon's offers sandwiches and soups, but the draw is the ice cream sundaes, which are truly decadent.
Planning Notes
- Go bananas. The banana split was invented in nearby Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and it's one of Klavon's specialties.
- Local twist. Float the Three Rivers is a sundae that features vanilla ice cream and a soda representing one of the three rivers in Pittsburgh.
- Souvenir opportunity. Klavon's sells souvenirs like t-shirts and banana split snow globes.
- Proud owner. Ask the owner about the history of the restaurant, and he'll probably show you the watermarks on the wall from the St. Patrick's Day Flood in 1936.
